SUMMARY:Creating Joy: A Culinary Experience for Families at RMHC (Kwun Tong House)
DESCRIPTION:When your child is in hospital\, the world shrinks. Days are measured by test results. Meals are eaten standing up. Sleep comes in shifts between ward visits. The small\, ordinary joys that hold a family together — cooking together\, eating together\, laughing together — quietly disappear. On 28 January\, the Peak II Foundation and Les Beatitudes Foundation set out to bring one of those small joys back. At Ronald McDonald House Charities (Kwun Tong) — a place that provides families with a home away from home while their children undergo treatment — 24 families gathered around egg waffle stations for an afternoon that smelled like golden batter and sounded like something many of them hadn’t heard in a while: their own laughter. The Mothers Behind the BatterThe women running the workshop weren’t professional chefs or paid event staff. They were volunteer mothers from Les Beatitudes Foundation — grassroots women from Sham Shui Po and Wong Tai Sin who have been trained in practical skills and community service through the Foundation’s programmes. These mothers know something about hardship. Many came to Hong Kong as new immigrants with no support network\, no income\, and no sense of belonging. Through Les Beatitudes\, they gained skills\, earned allowances\, and discovered that their hands could do more than just provide for their own families — they could bring comfort to others. On this afternoon\, they arrived early. They fine-tuned the egg batter. They checked every ingredient for freshness and quality. They did this not because someone told them to\, but because they understood — deeply\, personally — what it means to go through a difficult season and be met with care from a stranger. That understanding is something no training manual can teach. It comes from lived experience. And it is exactly what made this workshop different from any catering service. A Break That Was More Than a BreakFor the 24 families at RMHC\, this workshop offered something deceptively simple: a moment to stop being a “caregiver” and just be a parent again. To watch their child’s face light up over a fresh egg waffle. To chat with another family going through something similar. To feel\, even briefly\, that life still holds small pockets of sweetness. For the children — many of whom are navigating medical challenges no child should have to face — the afternoon was simply fun. No tests\, no waiting rooms. Just batter\, warmth\, and the thrill of watching an egg waffle puff up in the mould. And for the Les Beatitudes mothers\, the day was a reminder of how far they’ve come. Women who once needed community now create it. Women who once felt invisible now stand in a kitchen and make 24 families feel seen. The Chain of CareThis is what Peak II Foundation means when we talk about the multiplier effect: We provided the funding. Les Beatitudes Foundation trained the mothers. The mothers brought their skills\, their empathy\, and their time. Ronald McDonald House Charities opened its doors and connected us with families in need. And 24 families walked away with full stomachs\, lighter hearts\, and the knowledge that a room full of strangers genuinely cared about them. No single organisation could have created this moment alone. It took a chain of care — each link strengthening the next. About Our PartnersPeak II Foundation empowers individuals of all ages through education\, skills development\, and community connection. We believe the most effective giving doesn’t stop at a single recipient — it creates a ripple\, equipping one person to uplift many. Les Beatitudes Foundation transforms grassroots women into skilled community contributors through creative arts\, crafts\, and service programmes — proving that empowerment is not a destination but a relay. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) provides a home away from home for families with seriously ill children\, offering accommodation\, meals\, and emotional support so that families can stay close to their child during treatment. Impact at a Glance 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 24 families participated 🙋 Volunteer mothers from Les Beatitudes led the workshop 🧇 One beloved Hong Kong delicacy\, shared with love 💛 A moment of normality for families navigating the hardest chapter of their lives At Peak II Foundation\, we believe that the smallest acts of care — a fresh egg waffle\, a genuine smile\, a moment of shared laughter — can carry more healing power than we imagine. We will continue creating spaces where empowered individuals bring warmth to those who need it most.
