A Successful Community Health Celebration: Brain Health Carnival for Seniors

Bringing together for a vibrant day of magic and community spirit

Here’s something most people don’t think about until it’s too late: by the time a senior begins showing signs of cognitive decline, the window for early intervention has often already narrowed. Stroke prevention, brain health awareness, and early detection aren’t just medical topics — they are family topics. And they are best discussed not in a doctor’s office, but in a community setting where seniors actually feel comfortable enough to listen.

That’s exactly what the National Day Brain Health Carnival set out to do.

A Sunday That Was Both Fun and Urgent

Organised by the DreamWorks Foundation (夢同行慈善基金) on 28 September, the carnival welcomed over 100 seniors from the Lok Wah community for an afternoon that managed to be joyful and genuinely important at the same time.

The event opened with a magic show that had the room buzzing — the magician pulled residents into the act, sparking the kind of surprised laughter that makes you forget your age for a moment. But the centrepiece of the programme was a health talk by Dr. Mak Wai-kit, Specialist in Neurosurgery, who spoke plainly and warmly about stroke, cognitive impairment, and practical steps for protecting brain health.

What made Dr. Mak’s session particularly valuable was a message that went beyond the seniors themselves: he spoke directly to younger family members about their role in caregiving and early detection. A daughter who notices her mother repeating the same question. A son who realises his father has stopped reading the newspaper. These small observations, Dr. Mak explained, can be the difference between early intervention and a missed opportunity.

Health education delivered with warmth, in a setting where people feel safe — that is community care at its most effective.

10 Peak II Volunteers on the Ground

Peak II Foundation deployed 10 volunteers to support the carnival. Their role went well beyond logistics. Our volunteers spent the afternoon in conversation with the elderly participants — sitting with them during the magic show, walking them between activities, and simply being present in the way that matters most to someone who may not have had a visitor all week.

For our volunteers, the day was a reminder of something Peak II Foundation believes deeply: that the elderly are not a problem to be managed. They are people to be valued, listened to, and celebrated. Every conversation our volunteers had — about a resident’s grandchildren, about what Lok Wah used to look like, about whether the magician’s trick was real — was an act of connection that no programme design can manufacture. It happens only when people genuinely show up.

Building the Ecosystem

The carnival also provided an opportunity for Peak II Foundation to connect with fellow charitable organisations and community leaders, including Kwun Tong District Councillors Mr. Tsang Wing-fai, Mr. Lam Wai, and Mr. Lee Ka-hang, whose presence and support reinforced the importance of cross-sector collaboration in serving our elderly population.

Peak II Foundation believes that no single organisation can address the complex needs of ageing communities alone. Events like this strengthen the web of relationships — between charities, local government, medical professionals, and volunteers — that make sustained community support possible.

At Peak II Foundation, we believe that caring for our seniors means more than providing services — it means being present, listening with patience, and ensuring that every elderly person feels seen, valued, and connected. We are grateful to the DreamWorks Foundation for creating this space, and to our volunteers who gave their Sunday to make it warmer.
