Vol. I | Mid-Autumn 2025 · A Loving Mid-Autumn
The Mid-Autumn Festival is about reunion. Families gather. Mooncakes are shared. Lanterns are lit. But for a young mother navigating life alone in Kwai Fong, an elderly resident in a Sandy Bay care home, a visually impaired student in Pok Fu Lam, or a sewing mother in a subdivided flat in Sham Shui Po — reunion with family isn’t always possible. Sometimes, community has to become family instead.
On 3 October, around 100 people from five very different organisations gathered at Union Church Hong Kong for “A Loving Mid-Autumn 2025” — an evening organised by Les Beatitudes Foundation and sponsored by Peak II Foundation that proved that the warmest reunions do not require shared bloodlines. They require shared tables.
Look at who was in that room:
- St. James’ Settlement (Wanchai)
- SAGE Madam Ho Sin Hang Home for the Elderly (Sandy Bay)
- Caritas Project Hyacinth – Young Mothers (Kwai Fong)
- Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired (Pok Fu Lam)
- Les Beatitudes Foundation Sewing Mothers (Sham Shui Po & Wong Tai Sin)
That is not just an event. That is the kind of community Peak II Foundation exists to help build.
An Accordion in the Dark
The morning began with a performance that set the tone for everything that followed. Sam, a blind musician, took up his accordion and filled the church with melodies that needed no sight to be felt.
Born without vision, Sam discovered the accordion’s distinctive sound as a child and devoted years to mastering it, eventually performing at international competitions. But on this evening, he wasn’t performing for judges. He was playing for a room full of people who understood — each in their own way — what it means to navigate life with challenges that others cannot see.
His music offered something that no spoken programme could: a shared moment of stillness, beauty, and connection that transcended every difference in that room.
Hands at Work
What followed Sam’s performance was deliberately hands-on — because Les Beatitudes Foundation understands that the fastest way to connect strangers is to give them something to make together.
At the Egg Puffs Workshop, participants crowded around stations to make Hong Kong’s beloved street snack, guided by Les Beatitudes mothers who have become experts at running these sessions. The imperfect results — lopsided puffs, batter spills, triumphant golden ones held up for applause — generated more laughter and conversation than any icebreaker exercise ever could.
The Rabbit Lantern Folding session brought out a different kind of focus — quiet concentration as elderly hands and young hands alike shaped paper into the Mid-Autumn’s most iconic symbol. For the Ebenezer students, the exercise was entirely tactile, folding by feel, and the lanterns they produced were no less beautiful for it.
To close the evening, volunteer chefs baked Heart Cookies fresh on-site — a small, warm gesture that sent every participant home with sweetness in their hands and in their memory.
Each participant also received mooncakes sponsored by CLP Power — a traditional touch that completed the festival atmosphere.
The Mothers at the Centre
There is something worth pausing on here. The Les Beatitudes sewing mothers — women who entered the Foundation’s programmes as beneficiaries seeking skills and income — were the ones running this event. They organised the activities. They guided the workshops. They welcomed participants from four other organisations into a space they had helped create.
These are the same women who led egg waffle workshops at RMHC and at the SAGE elderly home. The same women who facilitate collage art sessions using upcycled neckties.
Every time Peak II Foundation supports Les Beatitudes, the same pattern emerges: women who were once on the receiving end of help become the ones creating warmth for others. On this Mid-Autumn afternoon, they didn’t just participate in a festival of reunion — they built one, from scratch, for 100 people who needed it.
About Our Partners
