The Scent of Remembering
Rice dumplings and the memories they carry—a Dragon Boat visit to SAGE Madam Ho Sin Hang Home
Date: 9 June 2026
Location: SAGE Madam Ho Sin Hang Home for the Elderly (Cyberport)
A sticky rice dumpling looks simple enough — bamboo leaves, glutinous rice, a fold, a knot. Yet for an elderly resident who had not made one in decades, its familiar touch and aroma brought back memories of childhood kitchens, a mother’s hands and festivals long past.
On 9 June 2026, Peak II Foundation returned to SAGE Madam Ho Sin Hang Home for the Elderly (Cyberport) with our long-time partner, Les Beatitudes Foundation, for a Dragon Boat Festival dumpling workshop. It was our second visit to SAGE that year.
Residents wrapped their own dumplings, sometimes with assistance and sometimes guided by the memory in their hands. Meanwhile, the Les Beatitudes volunteer mothers had prepared cooked dumplings in advance, allowing everyone to enjoy a warm taste without waiting.
The activity was not simply about learning a craft. The bamboo leaves, rice and familiar aroma offered a path back to memories that words might not easily reach.
There is a reason we return. A first visit begins with “hello”; the next brings a recognised face, a remembered name and a relationship that has grown a little deeper.
For older people whose social world may be narrowing, familiarity itself is a form of care. Sometimes, care is measured simply by our willingness to return—and to bring the bamboo leaves with us.
